Suppose we asked a group of Presidential candidates if they believed in the existence of atoms, and a third of them said "no"? That would be a truly appalling show of scientific illiteracy, would it not? Yet something like this happened a week ago during the Republican presidential debate.
Even though insects have a small body size, they need more than a simple, small respiratory system to provide enough oxygen to sustain their lives. Using X-rays to visualize what lies beneath their hard outer chitin layer, researchers have recently found that the bugs have a more complex breathing apparatus than previously suspected.

One of the most serious and least understood threats to the world's ecosystems is the problem of invasive species-exotic plants, animals and other organisms that are brought into habitats and subsequently spread at a rapid rate, often replacing native species and reducing biodiversity.

Female koalas indulge in lesbian "sex sessions", rejecting male suitors and attempting to mate with each other, sometimes up to five at a time, according to researchers. The furry, eucalyptus-eating creatures appear to develop this tendency for same-sex liaisons when they are in captivity. In the wild, they remain heterosexual.
SCIENCE

Biologists are studying a strange phenomenon here in the Northwest - more than 100 of the region's red-tailed hawks are suffering from a mysterious deformity that is making their beaks grow faster than normal. Experts say this mystery is hard to solve. It could be natural, genetic, environmental or perhaps a result of toxic pollution.
The auditory and communicative behaviors within groups of humpbacks reveal remarkable intelligence. However, since whale specimens are rare-either harvested from beached whales or sick aquarium residents-scientists know only the basics of their brain surface anatomy and are virtually ignorant about what goes on underneath.

Tsk tsk, the US is indeed conservative and anti-Darwinian
Researchers have developed a screening method to examine how newly made nanoparticles — particles with dimensions on the order of billionths of a meter — interact with human cells following exposure for various times and doses.
